The Second Amendment
"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
This simple, 27 word clause may well be the most important 27 words in the multitude of documents that comprise the laws of the United States of America. If the government is ever successful in repealing this amendment, then law abiding citizens no longer posses the means to defend the other 9 Amendments in the Bill of Rights. Without the Bill of Rights, the people become slaves to an oppressive government.
This amendment, along with the rest of the Bill of Rights, was adopted into law on December 15, 1791 and has been the law of the land for 221 years.
In 2008 and 2010, the Supreme Court issued two landmark decisions concerning the Second Amendment. In District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008), the Court ruled that the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to possess a firearm, unconnected to service in a militia and to use that
arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home. In dicta, the Court listed many longstanding prohibitions and restrictions on firearms possession as being consistent with the Second Amendment. In McDonald v. Chicago, 561 U.S. 3025 (2010), the Court ruled that the Second Amendment limits state and local governments to the same extent that it limits the federal government. (1)
The Second Amendment finds it basis in the 1689 English Bill of Rights. The right to have arms in English history is believed to have been regarded as a long-established natural right in English law, auxiliary to the natural and legally defensible rights to life.
Notwithstanding the Supreme Court decisions and the long established right to keep and bear arms, we cannot let down our guard. We must remain vigilant and defend against all attacks on our God given right to defend our families, ourselves and our property.
When one closely examines the intent of the anti-gun crowd it is not about guns ... it is about control! Be it health care choices, what we eat, how large a soda we can purchase, what we can put in our children's school lunches or whether our children can pray in school; it is all about government taking away our God given rights and our Constitutional freedoms, and taking control of every aspect of our life.
We must remain vigilant, my friends. We must preserve, protect and defend The Constitution of The United States ... it is all too apparent that the majority of our elected officials will not.
"Sic semper tyrannis!"
